5PB has been instrumental in shaping criminal law for over 100 years. Members have played parts in some of the most memorable cases known to our legal system.
We take pride in our friendly atmosphere, the quality of our advocacy and client care, and of chambers' case management and clerking.
5PB recognises that pupillage is a vital stage of a barrister's career. Each pupil spends four months with three supervisors, allowing continuity of supervision as they transition from their non-practising first six to handling their own cases in their second six.
It has been a long-standing policy of chambers to only recruit our junior tenants from those who have successfully completed pupillage with us, and to recruit tenants based only on individual merit.
Financial and Other Support Available
Our financial award for pupils commencing in 2025 is £40,000. This is made up of an award of £30,000 (paid in the first six months) plus £10,000 guaranteed earnings in the second six months. In addition, our pupils do not pay clerks' fees on earnings. Up to £1,000 of the award can be provided in advance once the BPTC has been successfully completed.
During the first six months, any travel expenses outside the M25 are reimbursed by Chambers.

All applicants must apply through the application form on Chambers’ website. The process follows the same timetable as Gateway applications.
Any Other Relevant Information
Chambers’ main area of practice is crime, but many members specialise in other practice areas such as professional regulation, business crime and financial services, consumer law, health & safety, inquests & inquiries and private prosecutions. Pupillages will focus on crime but provide opportunity for experience in other areas.
