Pupillage Vacancy Information

About Broadway House Chambers

Broadway House Chambers has been at the forefront of the legal profession in the North of England for nearly 100 years. Based in Leeds and Bradford, all pupils will receive a professional and rewarding pupillage enabling them to begin a successful career in their chosen profession.

Barristers are often said to be drawn from a narrow, privileged elite, unrepresentative of the communities they serve. At Broadway House Chambers we seek to challenge that stereotype: we are proud of our history but we strive to offer a distinctive, innovative approach to the provision of legal services. Broadway House Chambers is recognised as ‘one of the leading sets in the North of England with some extremely talented young barristers coming through the ranks’ (Legal 500).

The end of the Covid-19 restrictions has meant a significant increase in instructions and we are looking for talented pupils who share our ambition and vision for the future.

On completion of a pupillage each pupil will be considered for a tenancy. In deciding whether to offer a tenancy, Chambers will consider how well the particular pupil has completed their pupillage, together with reports from the pupil supervisor and any other relevant matters.

If a tenancy is offered, the new tenant will be expected to commence their practice in the area of law in which they did their pupillage. This is to ensure that particular team can develop and expand, thereby offering an enhanced service to our instructing solicitors.

Pupils will be expected to participate in social functions within Chambers and to network with solicitors at social and work related events organised by the individual teams and by Chambers.

Interviews will be offered to those with a good academic background, who can show a commitment to the area of law in which they wish to practice and a commitment to the North of England. Each year we receive a large number of applications. It is not easy to choose those to interview. It is therefore important to standout, and in addition to the reasons you qualify tell us what you can bring to your chosen team and to Chambers.

Family Law pupils will experience conferences, dispute resolution hearings and final hearings. They will be expected to assist with the preparation for conferences, legal research, drafting position statements, skeletons arguments and orders.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Structure of Pupillage

Pupils will be assigned to a pupil supervisor for a 12-month pupillage, during which they will participate in court proceedings alongside other members of Chambers in the initial six months. Additionally, pupils will engage in conferences, handle paperwork, and be responsible for undertaking paperwork for other members of Chambers, not just their assigned supervisor. This approach ensures a diverse range of experiences for each pupil, allowing Chambers to comprehensively evaluate their progress and capabilities. Upon entering the second six months, pupils can anticipate actively conducting their own work in court. Your supervisor will be available throughout the second six months.

Financial and Other Support Available

Guaranteed earnings of £39,000 (£13,000 award in first six months and £26,000 guaranteed in the second six months).

Equality Diversity and Inclusion

Broadway House Chambers is committed to promoting equality and diversity in and out of the workplace. We do this by ensuring that our policy documents are updated and that all staff, pupils and tenants are aware of any changes. Broadway House Chambers values and respects each individual as an equal regardless of their gender, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age and ability.
