Broadway House Chambers has been at the forefront of the legal profession in the North of England for nearly 100 years. Based in Leeds and Bradford, all pupils will receive a professional and rewarding pupillage enabling them to begin a successful career in their chosen profession.
Barristers are often said to be drawn from a narrow, privileged elite, unrepresentative of the communities they serve. At Broadway House Chambers we seek to challenge that stereotype: we are proud of our history but we strive to offer a distinctive, innovative approach to the provision of legal services. On completion of a pupillage each pupil will be considered for a tenancy. In deciding whether to offer a tenancy, Chambers will consider how well the particular pupil has completed their pupillage, together with reports from the pupil supervisor and any other relevant matters.
If a tenancy is offered, the new tenant will be expected to commence their practice in the area of law in which they did their pupillage. This is to ensure that particular team can develop and expand, thereby offering an enhanced service to our instructing solicitors.
Pupils will be expected to participate in social functions within Chambers and to network with solicitors at social and work related events organised by the individual teams and by Chambers.
Interviews will be offered to those with a good academic background, who can show a commitment to the area of law in which they wish to practice and a commitment to the North of England. Each year we receive a large number of applications. It is not easy to choose those to interview. It is therefore important to standout, and in addition to the reasons you qualify tell us what you can bring to your chosen team and to Chambers.
Structure of Pupillage
Mixed Civil pupils will practice in all areas, except Crime and Family. Within the Civil bracket we include Employment, Immigration, Civil (Business, Property and Probate Team) and Sport. Mixed Civil pupils will visit Tribunals nationwide and will have the convenience of being close to the Bradford Immigration Tribunal, the Leeds Employment Tribunal and the Leeds Business, Property and Probate Court.

During the first six months, pupils shadow members of chambers, gaining insight into their practice area. In the second six months, pupils operate "on their own feet," taking on courtroom advocacy by conducting their own cases. Each pupil is assigned a pupil supervisor, who serves as their primary contact and support throughout their twelve month pupillage. Supervisors provide regular feedback and support the pupils progress to ensure their work meets their training requirements.
We have an office in Bradford and an office in Leeds. You will be working across both sites.
Financial and Other Support Available
Chambers provides funding of a guaranteed income of £39,000 (the “Award”). This comprises of a grant of £13,000 in the first six months (non-practising period) followed by a guarantee of earnings of £26,000 during the second six months practising period on the condition that you are available for work for this period, only subject to any holiday entitlement being taken.
First six-month pupils will incur travelling expenses in getting to court or chambers. Chambers will recompense the pupil for all such reasonable expenses incurred.
Pupils will be given access to online resources through the Lexis Nexis library.
