Pupillage Vacancy Information

About Authorised Education and Training Organisation
CANDEY is an elite firm of solicitors, barristers, US Attorneys, BVI, Indian, Dubai, and French lawyers based in Lincoln’s Inn (8 Stone Buildings and 8 Old Square). We specialise in commercial litigation and international arbitration. We have offices in New York, Vienna and are in the process of opening in Singapore and the BVI. Consistently ranked amongst much larger international firms, we appear in some of the biggest commercial cases in the English and BVI High Court, Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, and in significant international arbitrations. We strive to combine the best qualities of a chambers with those of a traditional law firm, in a thoroughly collegiate environment and supportive culture.

We are looking to grow organically through the recruitment of bright and ambitious pupils who we aim to retain on qualification. As well as an excellent grasp of law and procedure, you will be hardworking, a team player, with emotional intelligence, judgment, and commercial nous. Above all, you must have a sense of humour, and a desire to push boundaries and influence the development of the law.

This is a unique offering and we are particularly drawn to candidates who may prefer and are particularly attracted to a hybrid environment in which solicitors and barristers collaborate to achieve great results.

Our core areas of practice are as follows:

  • Corporate and commercial litigation – We specialise in a wide range of international commercial, financial and technology disputes, including contract, company, joint venture, partnership, and shareholder claims, as well as civil fraud and professional negligence.
  • International arbitrations – We have acted in a wide range of arbitrations administered by all the major institutions, including the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, HKIAC, SIAC and DIAC, as well as ad hoc arbitrations. The vast majority of our arbitration work contains multiple cross-border elements, most particularly in relation to the CIS, US, BVI, and Cyprus.
  • Insolvency – We act for and against receivers, liquidators, and administrators, including interim receivers and provisional liquidators.
  • Regulatory disputes and sanctions – We represent individuals and corporations in cross-border government investigations, regulatory enforcement actions, internal investigations, and financial crime prosecutions. We are also regularly engaged to help international companies navigate US and UK sanctions and export controls.
  • Lawyers’ rights – We have a special interest in fighting for lawyers’ rights, as by empowering lawyers and strengthening their ability to recover on contingent agreements, we facilitate access to justice for those with limited resources.

We regularly work with or on behalf of other lawyers in other jurisdictions, particularly in the British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Dubai, Russia, Ukraine, and the USA.

Structure of Pupillage
Pupils will generally have three different supervisors during pupillage, all of whom will be practising barristers at CANDEY. They will work with their supervisors as well as other barristers and solicitors across the full spectrum of the firm’s work. Pupils will also work alongside external barristers instructed on the firm’s cases, including KCs. In addition to drafting pleadings, merits advices and skeleton arguments, pupils are exposed more generally to the practical realities of litigation and arbitration, including drafting interim applications and witness statements, preparing detailed inter partes correspondence, and attending client conferences. We believe that it is important that pupils also see as much live Court action as possible. In their second six, pupils will be afforded the opportunity where possible to undertake oral advocacy in Court in their own right. They will acquire advocacy training (in addition to that obtained through their Inn of Court) through the firm’s advocacy training programme and are encouraged to gain further experience by volunteering with schemes such as the Company Insolvency Pro Bono Scheme.

Equality Diversity and Inclusion

CANDEY is firmly committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion in relation to all of its staff and applicants, pursuant to its Equality and Diversity Policy. Please contact the Management Team at mt@candey.com for further information.
