Please contact the Chambers Director john.binks@citadelchambers.com with any specific enquires regarding any of the matters covered in the attached or with regard to accessibility of Chambers.
How to Apply
Aspiring barristers are invited to apply to chambers between Wednesday 4 January 2023 and Wednesday 8 February 2023 using the Pupillage Gateway application system to search for the relevant Pupillage Vacancy and selecting ‘Apply for this pupillage’.
In addition to the standardised Bar Council questionnaire, candidates will be asked to respond to the following question from Chambers:
Set out a written argument in favour of the following proposition:
Recent acquittals of Extinction Rebellion protestors demonstrate that decisions of guilt or innocence in quasi political matters cannot be fairly left to juries.
Your response should be regarded as a piece of written advocacy. You should consider and negate contrary arguments. Your response should not exceed 1000 words (5000 characters). Marks will be awarded for clarity, brevity, and the strength of arguments postulated.
Summarise the experience you have which you believe gives you an understanding of the nature of work at the criminal bar.
We are offering a crime-based pupilage to applicants whom we would ultimately wish to become tenants and stay with us on a long-term basis. We are looking for evidence of some understanding of the nature of criminal practice and an indication that you have the innate skills, application and stamina needed to succeed. Your response should not exceed 400 words (2000 characters).
About AETO and Structure of Pupillage
Citadel Chambers is a large established set based in Birmingham and operating across the Midlands. We specialize mainly in criminal work. We are a very busy set with many loyal instructing solicitors. Pupilages are always awarded with the expectation that subject to performance successful applicants will become members and remain with us on a long-term basis. We view the ability to demonstrate a commitment to practice at the Criminal Bar as essential
A copy of our policy detailing operation and structure of pupilage is attached.
