Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

About AETO and Structure of Pupillage

Job summary

The CPS is excited to be offering The Legal Trainee Scheme; a pathway for training commencing in September 2024.

The September 2024 pathway is open to applications from individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in law (or have completed a conversion) at a minimum 2:2 and have completed, or will be due to complete, their post graduate Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC/BVC) in order for them to start pupillage in September 2024.

The September 2024 pathway means we are now also inviting applications from final year law undergraduates/individuals completing a law conversion course with a predicted minimum 2:2, who will have completed their BPTC/BVC in order to start pupillage in September 2024.

The CPS is offering approximately 80 legal trainee posts in total (Solicitors and Barristers) for the September 2024 pathway to be based across England and Wales.

Please note that the number of posts available is subject to change and that final offers will reflect business needs.

The CPS National Legal Trainee Scheme is open to those who wish to complete their pupillage with the CPS with a goal of becoming a permanent CPS Crown Prosecutor. Pupillage is available, with posts offered in order of merit to the top performing candidates, subject to appropriate supervisory arrangements in place. Upon successful completion of the CPS Legal Trainee Scheme, candidates will become permanent Crown Prosecutors.

This is a full-time post. However, requests for flexible and part-time working will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department.

For comprehensive details about the process, please see the attached CPS Legal Trainee Candidate Pack.

Job description

The CPS delivers justice - working with our partners at the heart of the criminal justice system to protect the public and create a safe society. As a legal trainee you will play a key role in this while getting the support and opportunities you need to develop your career.

Supporting the success of our people is a priority for the CPS. Post qualification, our legal trainees have achieved progression into key leadership roles and/or become specialists with considerable expertise in complex and intellectually challenging casework such as fraud, extradition, sexual offences and counter terrorism.

Upon successful qualification, legal trainees will be offered permanent posts as Crown Prosecutors, where they will initially be based in a Magistrates Court Unit with the expectation that they will then gain the necessary skills and competence to apply for Senior Crown Prosecutor posts and beyond through regular recruitment.

Opportunities to apply for roles as Crown Advocates, who exercise Crown Court rights predominately, may follow qualified appointment as Crown Prosecutors. This is not guaranteed, however, as they are dependent on the developing requirements of the service, which is why a programme of career progression for the individual -integral to the offer and many other opportunities to specialise in unique areas of prosecution work - is available.
