Pupillage Vacancy Information

About Authorised Education and Training Organisation and Structure of Pupillage
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales. The CPS is independent, and we make our decisions independently of the police and government.

Our duty is to make sure that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence, and to bring offenders to justice wherever possible. The first six months are non-practising. You will be learning by shadowing your supervisor, observing advocacy, practice, and procedure in the most appropriate and accessible courts for your placement and as many of the types of work possible to engender the widest possible learning.

In the second six months pupils will have certain rights of audience. After being granted a provisional practicing certificate you will be finding your feet in the magistrates’ court, exercising your rights of audience at appropriate levels. You will also be doing so in the Crown Court too under guidance and supervision in certain categories of cases.
Throughout the pupillage, all pupils will participate in our centralised legal development programme of training courses.

All pupils who successfully complete their pupillage will be guaranteed a permanent role as either a Crown Prosecutor or Crown Advocate, dependant on business needs, upon qualification.

Financial and Other Support Available
In addition to your salary during this period, you will receive expenses to cover your travel from your office to courts in your area. All CPS employees receive £350 individual learning allowance to use towards personal development in your role/career, in addition to the bespoke legal trainee development programme, delivered by our in-house training team.

Equality Diversity and Inclusion
The CPS has made significant progress on equality in employment in recent years. The CPS is committed to further progressing equality in employment and to developing a high performing prosecution service which utilises and values diversity at all levels. There is a clear link between equality and diversity in employment and prosecutions, therefore we need to ensure that our workforce is reflective at all levels of the communities we serve.

Through the CPS People Strategy, we are committed to fairness and inclusion and respecting individual differences whilst pursuing a common purpose where the workforce is treated fairly and feels valued for the contribution every member of staff makes.
