We offer the London minimum award which is set to be £20,703. This will be split over 12 months, with the second six constituting guaranteed earnings.

At Crucible we believe in giving all candidates fair and equal standing in our assessments and recruitment of pupils. We compiled a report that can be found on our website that identified certain parts of our recruitment process that needed improvement. We have taken steps to adjust our marking criteria accordingly.
How to Apply
Aspiring barristers are invited to apply to chambers between Wednesday 4 January 2023 and Wednesday 8 February 2023 using the Pupillage Gateway application system to search for the relevant Pupillage Vacancy and selecting ‘Apply for this pupillage’.
In addition to the standardised Bar Council questionnaire, candidates will be asked to respond to additional questions from Chambers about our areas of work and candidates' experiences before applying for pupillage. Our questions will include:
- Why do you want to be a barrister? (Maximum character 1500)
- Why do you believe you will make a good barrister? (Maximum characters 1500)
- Why do you want to join Crucible? (Maximum characters 1500)
- Why do you want to work in our areas of practice? (Maximum characters 1500)
- Please give an example of a time when you have had to overcome adversity in order to achieve a goal (Maximum character 2000)
- Are there any particular experiences in your life that we should know about in order to treat your application more fairly? (This will be a non mandatory question, we include it only for those candidates for whom it will be relevant) (Maximum characters 2000)
About AETO and Structure of Pupillage
Crucible Chambers is a modern and progressive set that is based in Central London. We have a thriving base in criminal defence and prosecution work, as well as regulatory and professional discipline. We also have a stronghold in the world of financial and white-collar crime.
We seek to recruit two 12-month Pupils starting in October 2023. Our Pupils can expect to receive first class training as part of our annual advocacy programme, which is held almost weekly during the first six months and continues to provide support once our Pupils are on their feet. In their second six months, our Pupils will undertake instructions in all of our practice areas, including private Magistrates’ Court cases, Crown Court matters, and hearings before various regulatory and disciplinary bodies.
At Crucible, we are actively seeking Pupils who will thrive in the challenging and exciting environment of the Criminal Bar, who are friendly and approachable, yet will be fearless in their representation of their client.
We take care in selecting our Pupils as we aim to invest significant time and expertise in them with a view to them becoming potential prospective tenants. We advise prospective candidates to look at the pupillage report found on our website, prepared by Crucible last year after the entire process. We have adapted and made changes to our marking criteria and selection process to ensure that we meet the high expectations that we set for ourselves in choosing the best and most deserving candidates, regardless of their background.
