Nexus the Chambers of Michael Mansfield KC – 12 Months – March 2026

Pupillage Vacancy Information

About Nexus and Structure of Pupillage

Nexus is a thriving common law set with practitioners specialising in criminal, family and general civil law. At our helm we have Michael Mansfield KC, who needs no introduction. We are a dynamic, progressive set that fearlessly defend access to justice.

Chambers’ criminal work is almost exclusively criminal defence. In family, Chambers’ work centres on childcare law, involving private and public law cases. The civil team is the smallest within Chambers, with practitioners undertaking a range of general civil work, particularly personal injury cases.

Nexus' pupils can expect to shadow, assist and learn from our diverse members and their respective practice areas and to be in court most days.

During your first six months non-practicing period you can expect to be under the guidance of two pupil supervisors, likely a specialist criminal practitioner in one seat and a family or mixed practitioner in the second. Pupils will get to work on real cases, assisting their supervisors with drafting and legal research. In recent years, pupils have assisted their supervisors (and other members of chambers) on high profile, complex cases, including in the Court of Appeal.

During your second six months practicing period, you can expect to be undertake your own work and to be in court most days with a particular focus on criminal defence in the Magistrates’ Court (including regular trials). There will also be the opportunity to undertake work in the Crown Court as well as occasional Family and Civil cases. In recent years, this has included pupils being able to take on their own Crown Court trials.

We emphasise the development of pupils, providing a supportive, friendly environment. We recruit pupils who can become tenants and have an excellent track record of offering tenancy to our pupils. We also operate a “buddy” system connecting pupils with a junior member of Chambers. A Welfare Officer is also available in Chambers to offer support when needed.

Reviews and training sessions are periodically undertaken throughout pupillage with feedback provided, in particular during the second six (practicing period) that shall include a review with the practice managers to discuss work load and client based feedback (if applicable).

Funding

Funding for pupillage at Chambers is equally divided between an award of £15,000 during first six and guaranteed earnings of £15,000 in second six. In addition, pupils will be reimbursed their reasonable travel expenses for attending court and essential courses.
