Pupillage Vacancy Information

About Authorised Education and Training Organisation

Three New Square Intellectual Property specialises in intellectual property law.
Pupils should expect to be exposed to the core areas of the work undertaken in chambers. The core areas are patents, registered trade marks, registered designs, design rights, copyright, confidential information and trade secrets and passing off. Pupils may be exposed to other work depending on circumstances during pupillage, such as cases involving information technology, computer contracts, media and entertainment law, scientifically complex litigation, arbitration, franchising, and related areas of European and UK competition law.

Structure of Pupillage

 Pupils will be assessed in line with the threshold standard and competences specified in the Professional Statement issued by the Bar Standards Board.
A single twelve month pupillage of two six month stages (reviewable after the first six months) is available.
Chambers looks for the following in its pupils:
  • high academic achievement achieved consistently throughout the candidate’s academic career (however, in accordance with Chambers’ commitment to the principles of flexibility and accessibility, Chambers adopts a flexible approach to prior learning and experience, by taking into account each candidate’s individual circumstances insofar as they are apparent from the application form);
  • an ability to think clearly, absorb and assimilate large amounts of material and to identify information relevant to the task in hand;
  • an ability of the candidate to work hard and diligently, particularly when essentially unsupervised;
  • an ability both to understand and work with technical information and material;
  • excellent written skills;
  • excellent oral skills;
  • an understanding that practice at the IP Bar is first and foremost a commercial enterprise;
  • excellent inter-personal skills;
  • a genuine interest in the area of intellectual property law.

Financial and Other Support Available

Chambers’ pupillage is funded. The award is £75,000 for the year, divided into a grant of £40,000 for the first 6 months and an income guarantee of £35,000 for the second 6 months. The pupil’s travel expenses (apart from normal travel between home and chambers) will be paid (or reimbursed) by Chambers. Chambers will also cover any expenses reasonably incurred by the pupil on attendance at courses required to be attended as part of pupillage.

Equality Diversity and Inclusion
Chambers is committed to equality and diversity. It recruits pupils and tenants, and provides pupillage, in accordance with its obligations under the BSB Handbook (in particular Core Duty 8, Rule C12 and the Equality and Diversity rules making up rules C110-C112), the Authorisation Framework promulgated by the BSB, including the Curriculum and Assessment Strategy, and the Bar Qualification Manual.
Acting Accessibility Officer for Three New Square is Geoffrey Pritchard. Applicants can contact him if desired prior to making an application.
