Pupillage Vacancy Information
Brick Court Chambers is one of the leading sets of barristers’ chambers in the UK, having a strong reputation for Commercial, Competition, Public and International/EU law.
Pupillage at Brick Court Chambers is more than just the final step in qualification as a barrister: it is an opportunity to work with some of the leading practitioners at the English Bar, and on some of the most important and interesting cases of the day. There is no Brick Court “type”. Provided that you have the ability and the determination to succeed as a barrister at the highest level, you will be welcome whatever your background. Those who undertake pupillage with us have very strong academic backgrounds (not necessarily in law), as well as good analytical ability, advocacy and communication skills, and evidence of resilience, determination and self-motivation.
Structure of Pupillage
Please refer to our website for further information https://www.brickcourt.co.uk/pupillage-and-mini-pupillage/pupillage
Each 12-month pupil is generally assigned three different pupil supervisors during the year and can expect to see a range of work within Chambers’ various specialisations. All pupils are provided with a senior mentor (KC) and a mentor ( junior tenant) from whom they can seek advice throughout the pupillage year.
The Tenancy Committee arranges a number of advocacy exercises (typically 6-7) throughout the year. The first two exercises are not assessed. After that, the exercises are assessed, although the training element remains very important.
In addition to the advocacy exercise and work for pupil supervisors, pupils complete the same six pieces of standardised assessed work. Set by six different members of Chambers and spanning the various specialisms within Chambers, all standardised work is assessed 'blind' by the member of Chambers who set it.
We do our best to make pupillage as enjoyable and interesting an experience as possible. It is made clear to all pupils that it is quality and not quantity of work that counts.
Pupils are welcomed into the social life of Chambers.
We offer a pupillage award of £80,000: £55,000 paid in equal instalments during the non-practising pupillage and £25,000 paid during the practising pupillage. Those who are offered and accept pupillage at Brick Court Chambers may drawn down up to £25,000 of their non-practising pupillage award during the year preceding pupillage. Chambers will also pay for any mandatory courses during pupillage and provide study leave where necessary.

1. Apply for an assessed mini-pupillage. Apply for a mini-pupillage using the online form which can be found on our website at https://www.brickcourt.co.uk/pupillage-and-mini-pupillage. The Winter season deadline is 10 January 2025 (12 Midday London time).
2. Apply for Pupillage between 2 January 2025 and 6 February 2025 using the Pupillage Gateway application system.
3. We occasionally consider applications for pupillage from established practitioners.
