Pupillage Vacancy Information
About Authorised Education and Training Organisation
Crystal Chambers are a small Chambers based in the heart of East London, at 44, Broadway, Stratford, E15 1XH, within easy commuting distance from several courts and all 4 Temples. We provide a mixed practice, covering, but not limited to: Housing, Immigration & Asylum, Crime, Family, Employment Law, Licensing, Probate, and Legislative Drafting.
We have an exceptional and formidable team of barrister professionals and support staff who provide an uncompromising level of expertise and service for clients throughout London and England. Our team of barristers are fully qualified to supply direct access and have undertaken the appropriate BSB approved training courses and have gained the rights of litigation.
Structure of Pupillage
Crystal Chambers are wishing to recruit one pupil through a fair and transparent process, abiding by the Equality Act 2010, and the mandatory timetable specified by the BSB. This pupillage is at the self-employed Bar, and upon successful completion of pupillage, an offer of tenancy will be made (subject to conditions). Particular reference will be given to:
- Equality
- Flexibility
- Accessibility
- Affordability
Pupillage funding will be in accordance with the Pupillage Funding Rules in the BSB Handbook. Additional expenses reasonably incurred by the pupil will be reimbursed, all training costs will be met, and re-sits should they be necessary will be paid for. We provide on induction Day an extensive e-learning package, details of which can be found on the website.
Financial and Other Support Available
Whilst it is difficult to detail earnings in the second-six, we anticipate that our pupil subject to receiving a Provisional Practising Certificate having successfully completed the first-six, will earn £15,000 to £20,000 in the second-six, and make regular appearances in court. Whatever fees that may be earned will be kept by the pupil, less the payment of the minimum pupillage award. No Chamber commission fees will be charged in the second-six.
We anticipate that if the pupil were to take tenancy, first-year earnings could be in the region of £30,000 to £40,000.
Other relevant information
Crystal Chambers commitment to the pupil is to not only provide clear policy documents, but also to deliver a training programme that ensures that the pupil meets the threshold standard in the required core competencies as laid down by the BSB. Upon commencement of pupillage the following written policies, but not limited to, will be provided:
Pupillage Agreement, Pupillage Policy, Pupillage Training Programme, Fair Recruitment Policy, Absence From Training Policy, Complaints And Grievances Policy, Anti-Harassment Policy, Reasonable Adjustments Policy, Disciplinary Policy. These policies along with our Pupillage information Pack are available from the Crystal Chambers Website, to view online and/or download (www.crystalchambers.co.uk)
The pupillage will be conducted in a manner that is fair and equitable, including a fair distribution of training opportunities. The pupil will be appointed a pupil supervisor, trained in accordance with the BSB’s requirements. Chambers will also ensure that adequate and appropriate insurance is in place for the pupil, and that any necessary assistance for the pupil to comply with any regulatory obligations is in place.
A pupillage within Crystal Chambers will provide the opportunity to encounter a cross-section of law at differing levels of complexity, crucial in developing all-round skills of advocacy, alongside acquiring a wider corpus of legal knowledge. Most fundamentally, our pupil would be part of a friendly, proactive, pragmatic, and ambitious set, driven by strong ethics and a passionate belief in social justice.
